Paper by Richard Tsong-Taatarii (for Anthropology 17, U.C. Berkeley, 1988) : "Bill Iino, not a pseudonym but his real name, was born in Oakland on April 25, in the year 1920. When asked whether the circumstances surrounding his birthday held any special significance, he responded with an emphatic ‘no.’ In any case, my informant is a middle-class, semi-retired gentleman of Japanese American descent who currently spends his time gardening, playing golf, and working part-time for under the table wages at a relative’s grocery store. Bill is what the Japanese call a Nisei or second generation Japanese American. The most interesting aspect of this man is that he served in the 442nd Battalion during World War II, a chapter of his life that affected the nature of his life experience."
